Family photoshoots should be fun, memorable, and yes—stress-free! If you’re worried about how to prepare or make the most of your time in front of the camera, I’m here to help. Here’s a simple guide to make your family photoshoot a relaxed and enjoyable experience.
Coordinate, Don’t Match!
One of the first things families think about is “what should we wear?” The key is to coordinate rather than match. Instead of dressing everyone in the same color, choose complementary tones that work well together. For a more detailed breakdown, check out my guide to styling your family here. In it, I explore ways to mix colors like orange, purple, and green for a cohesive, modern look. While you’re welcome to go all denim if that’s your vibe, you might want to avoid anything that feels too “90s throwback!”
Helping Kids Feel Comfortable
A successful, stress-free family photoshoot often hinges on the kids feeling relaxed. Before our session, I send out a questionnaire to learn more about your family. It’s my goal to connect with your children and help them feel comfortable. I always bring a few Hot Wheels cars as a little treat, which doubles as a prop for fun shots. Kids love it, and it makes getting on their level easy.
Embrace the Messy Moments
The best memories are often the ones we don’t plan. I’ve learned that a little spontaneity can create unforgettable photos. One of my favorite images of my oldest was taken at six months, just as he decided to drool all over the greenery he was sitting in! At the time, it felt like chaos, but now it’s a cherished memory. Trust that I’ll capture these sweet, real moments that show your kids as they are.
Take the Pressure Off the Kids
As a parent myself, I know how stressful family photos can be when kids aren’t cooperating. But remember, it’s totally normal for kids to be themselves! When parents try to keep everything perfectly posed, we sometimes miss the real smiles and laughter. Instead, let the kids play, and I’ll work on capturing them in those natural moments.
Fun Poses and Natural Interactions
To keep the session light and candid, I love encouraging families to do something active. Whether it’s walking, playing hide-and-seek, or unleashing the “tickle monster,” these activities help everyone feel comfortable and connected. I’ll also offer prompts if you’re looking for a little direction; sometimes, we all need a hint to get the best smiles.
Timing Is Everything
I always recommend scheduling your session when it works best for your family’s routine. While sunset can create stunning lighting and fall colors make for gorgeous backdrops, your family’s happiness matters most. If you’re working around nap times or other needs, choose a time that keeps everyone at their best.
